One upon a time there was a brilliant middle-aged strategy game series called Battle Isle (see it @ Wikipedia or MobyGames). Apparently it's no more, and that's why Advanced Strategic Command was such a joy to discover. ASC besides looking the part, also comes suspiciously close to playing like a proper Battle Isle game. It's a hex-based, turn-based, 100% old-fashioned strategy game released under the GNU license, thus quite freeware and tweakable.
